Scotland must not be an afterthought in high-speed rail plans - McInnes

Liberal Democrat Transport spokesperson Alison McInnes MSP has urged the Scottish Government to work with the UK Ministers to ensure that Scotland is included right from the outset in any high-speed rail blueprints brought forward by the UK Government.

Mrs McInnes' call comes ahead of tomorrow's debate in the Scottish Parliament on the potential benefits of a high-speed rail link for Scotland.

Commenting, Mrs McInnes said:

"Liberal Democrats want to see Scotland included right from the start in any high-speed rail plans brought forward by the UK Government.

"SNP Ministers need to put aside their rivalry with Westminster and pull out all the stops to make sure that we are incorporated into what could be the biggest rail infrastructure project in the last 50 years.

"It is simply not good enough that the UK Government's feasibility study into high-speed rail only includes connecting Scotland as a secondary priority.

"Improving rail connections between Scotland and the rest of the UK is vital for boosting the economy and tackling climate change.

"Scotland must not be an afterthought in an England-focused project. Liberal Democrats will campaign hard to make sure Scotland is included in any blueprints for high-speed rail right from the outset."

Ends.
