Rennie seeks assurances on TA following government u-turn

Following the Government's u-turn on proposals to slash Territorial Army spending, Liberal Democrat Defence Spokesperson Willie Rennie MP is seeking assurances from the MOD that the TA will be safe from future cutbacks.

Speaking during last night's debate on the TA in the House of Commons, Mr Rennie described the MOD's initial decision to suspend all training exercises for TA as "shockingly naïve".

Mr Rennie highlighted the damaging impact that the continual threat of cuts would have TA morale and warned of the knock on effect this could have on local units such as the Scottish Transport Regiment, headquartered in Dunfermline.

Commenting Mr Rennie said:

"I think the government has to be commended for changing its mind so quickly once it became clear there was considerable concern.

"But this decision shows the Ministry of Defence has lost control of its budget and that is now a bigger priority.

"This decision demonstrated shocking naivety. They are making reckless decisions in emergency circumstances at the last minute.

"There is a concern that the TA now may be first in line in future cutbacks. The TA is a vital resource and is one that we should be looking to maintain rather than undermine. The Scottish Transport Regiment is an impressive outfit and an essential part of the TA. I will be looking for assurances that the army won't offer these cutbacks again."
