Liberal Democrats have revealed that 24% of women and 19% of men have not participated in any sporting activity in the last year, including walking. These figures have actually got worse since 2007.
Liberal Democrat Health spokesman Ross Finnie MSP says the number of Scots who are completely inactive is a cause for concern.
Commenting, Mr Finnie said:
"It is very worrying that over a million Scots are still doing nothing active.
"This has dangerous repercussions both for the state of Scotland's health and the levels of participation in sport.
"It is clear from the increasing levels of obesity amongst younger people that far too many are leaving school without the basics of physical literacy making them increasingly inactive and far less likely to participate in any form of sport.
"It is a real concern that these statistics have got worse since 2007. The current strategy regarding sports participation is not working.
"We need a more co-ordinated approach between PE at schools, access to sports facilities and support from sports clubs."
Ends.
