Ministers failing on free swimming for Borders children

Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has accused Ministers of failing on their pre election pledge of free swimming for all school age children.

The MSP together with Scottish Borders Councillor and Executive Member for Education, Catriona Bhatia, has been pursuing the issue for months and so far Ministers have been unable to produce figures relating to the number of children in the Borders who have access to free swimming facilities.

Mr Hume said:

"The Scottish Government pledged to provide free swimming lessons for primary school children and Ministers have blatantly failed on that promise, which frankly is now only an aspiration. This is just another notch on the bedpost of the Scottish Government's failures.

"Scottish Swimming has been calling on the Scottish Government to provide free swimming, so it's now time for Ministers to deliver their pre election promise for children in the Borders."

Tweeddale West Councillor, Catriona Bhatia, added:

"Learning to swim can save a life, and it is a vital skill for children to acquire as early as possible. Yet again we see the SNP Government letting down children in the Borders and breaking another of their manifesto promises."
