Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Tavish Scott MSP is campaigning on the need for a fair fuel duty for rural Scotland and has attacked Conservative proposals for an additional tax on petrol.
Speaking from Inverness after the launch of his party's Highland manifesto, Tavish Scott said:
"Tory proposals on petrol pricing are a stealth tax in waiting.
"The Tories say they want a fuel price peg but they won't say at what price they'll set it.
"They risk making sky-high petrol prices permanent. Their own document says they will put fuel tax up in the future so that motorists will pay high pump prices even if the price of oil drops.
"The SNP has already pushed prices up through higher business rates, and the Tory proposals risk making things worse.
"We need fairness in petrol pricing - and the Liberal Democrats' plan for a rural fuel discount scheme will deliver it.
"People in rural and island communities who need their car should not pay an inflated amount.
"Liberal Democrats will deliver fair prices, fair taxes and a fair future for Scotland."
